The Sheffield Kidney Institute has an established international reputation for excellence in the field of CKD research. This research has been led by Professor El Nahas over the last 25 years. It consists of parallel and translational approaches for the study of CKD from basic science focusing on mechanisms of kidney scarring and remodelling to clinical studies. Clinical CKD research at the Sheffield Kidney Institute focuses on studies of the epidemiology of CKD in the community. This has included the KEAPS (Kidney Evaluation and Awareness Programme for Sheffield) and the KEOPS (Kidney Evaluation of Overweight Population in Sheffield) research programs that delineated factors predisposing to CKD in the general population. CKD research in Sheffield was also the first in the UK to delineate a link between poverty and social deprivation with CKD. In addition to studies of the epidemiology and natural history of CKD, research is focusing on identifying biomarkers that would predict the severity and outcomes of patients with CKD. Finally, the Sheffield Kidney Institute is at the forefront of clinical trials on the impact of interventions on clinical outcomes in CKD.
