Peritoneal dialysis research is lead by Dr Martin Wilkie. A particular interest has been new dialysis solutions - with some of the early work on icodextrin being carried out in Sheffield, and subsequently research into mixed dialysates involving icodextrin and glucose. Other studies have included work on bicarbonate buffered solutions and quality of life research. More recently Sheffield has been one of the founding sites of the UK Encapsulating Peritoneal Sclerosis Registry (EPS) and DNA bank and several new projects have been developed to try to understand that condition in more detail.
