There is an active clinical and experimental research going on in the field of renal transplantation at the SKI.  There are a number of clinical research projects including evaluation of the quality of life of live kidney donors and recipients following transplantation, factors influencing long-term outcomes following renal transplantation and strategies to reduce renal transplant waiting list is being examined by Mr Badri Shrestha. Other clinical research includes factors affecting graft survival in recipients transplanted with 'marginal' kidneys which is being lead by Mr Ahmed Halawa whilst and the clinical manifestations of donor-specific antibody development is being studied by Dr Will Mckane.

Experimental research include strategies to inhibit the progression of chronic allograft nephropathy and the role of the extracellular matrix protein Tissue Transglutaminase in renal ischaemia-reperfusion injury. For further details section on laboratory-based research.
